Official Announcement: Merger of the ENSTA Schools on January 1, 2025

Institute

After four years of ambitious collaborative work, the merger of ENSTA Paris and ENSTA Bretagne was made official on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, giving rise to a single ENSTA. Ranked among the very best engineering schools in France, ENSTA, a member of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, is located on the Paris-Saclay campus in Palaiseau as well as within the Greater West ecosystem through its campus in Brest. It thus combines their strengths and expertise in education and research to address strategic sovereignty challenges in a world seeking transformation and adaptation to major societal challenges: sustainable energy, transportation and mobility, defense and security, digital technology, maritime, space, health…

The decree formalizing this merger was published on December 1 and takes effect on January 1, 2025. The new School retains its EPSC-GE status and aims to expand its education and research activities by leveraging the expertise and synergies of its teams at the Paris-Saclay campus in Palaiseau and those at its Brest campus. Initiated in late 2021, this work is ongoing and will lead to a complete overhaul of the engineering program offerings for the 2026 academic year. These renewed and expanded programs will be presented starting in September 2025 on ENSTA’s new website, currently under development. ENSTA’s new visual identity will be unveiled in the coming days.

ENSTA, among the top engineering schools in France

As a member of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris) and part of the ecosystems of the Paris-Saclay campus in Palaiseau and the Greater West region, ENSTA now brings together more than 2,000 students, 200 faculty members, and 300 doctoral students, 9 renowned research laboratories, some thirty joint chairs and laboratories, and a community of 20,000 alumni.

By expanding its multidisciplinary approach with a scientific and technical foundation unprecedented in France and Europe, the School is strengthening its offerings in education and research excellence. This appeal and its standing among France’s top engineering schools will enable it to continue writing the history of engineering through major breakthroughs.

An expanded range of programs

The traditional programs of both schools will continue through the 2025 academic year.

Starting in the 2026 academic year, ENSTA will offer new engineering programs:

  • A general engineering program following the Mines-Ponts entrance exam at its two campuses (Paris-Saclay and Brest), available as a full-time or work-study program (apprenticeship contract);
  • a multidisciplinary and specialized engineering program focused on defense, security, and systems, offered jointly by ENSTA and ISAE-Supaéro, delivered across three campuses (Paris-Saclay, Brest, Toulouse), available as a full-time student or as a military engineering cadet “IETA ” status (under contract with the DGA) or as a work-study student (under contract with a defense industry company), following the Mines-Télécom competitive exam;
  • specialized engineering programs, following a two- or three-year post-secondary degree, under work-study status (apprenticeship contract).

These are complemented by master’s degrees, specialized master’s degrees, and doctoral programs.

Excellence & Innovation

Under the supervision of the Ministry of the Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, alongside École Polytechnique and ISAE Supaéro, ENSTA has played a key role in engineering for major industrial and technical sectors since 1741, contributing to the strategic autonomy of France and its international partners.

Innovation and mastery of complex systems are in its DNA. The School addresses training and research challenges across numerous strategic sectors—transportation and mobility, sustainable energy, maritime, defense and security, digital, space, and healthcare—where its graduates are highly sought after. ENSTA engineers quickly advance to leadership roles in engineering, management, and entrepreneurship. They form a close-knit network of alumni who remain deeply connected to their School.

A rich and unifying student life

The new ENSTA will offer its students an even more dynamic and enriching student life, as well as joint events and collaborative projects involving both campuses.
