ENSTA's governance and organization

ENSTA relies on complementary governance bodies to define its strategic, academic, and scientific orientation. Its Board of Directors is responsible for major decisions, and is supported by three advisory boards, namely Academic, Research, and Orientation and Review, which contribute to adapting curricula, developing research activities, and meeting recruiters' expectations.

Board of Directors

ENSTA's Board of Directors plays an essential role in governing the institution. It defines ENSTA's major orientations in terms of academic programs, research and scientific policy, and international cooperation.  A truly strategic body, it deliberates on the main decisions related to managing the institution and, more specifically approves academic program regulations. It may be consulted on any issue by its president or supervisory authority.

The Board reviews and adopts ENSTA's budget, amendments and the annual financial statement. It approves equity investments, subsidiary creation, the acceptance of donations or bequests, and can rule on debt forgiveness. It also decides on lease agreements, acquisitions, real estate exchanges or transfers, and approves agreements, contracts, and markets. In addition, the Board has the authority to authorize legal action, engage in various transactions, and implement measures to promote successful professional integration for ENSTA graduates.

Regarding academic affairs, the Board delivers an opinion on general admission requirements for students, auditors, trainees, and participants in postgraduate or specialized programs. It also comments on general academic regulations, the conditions for awarding degrees and certificates, and the institution's internal regulations, which are subsquently approved by the Minister of the Armed Forces. It is consulted on appointing the Director of Academic Programs and Research, as well as on recruitment rules within the institution.

Each year, the Board of Directors submits a detailed report on ENSTA's activities and operations to the Minister of the Armed Forces. It meets at least twice a year, when convened by its president, and may be convened at the request of half of its members or the supervisory authority.

Academic Board

The Academic Board plays an advisory role in the institution's governance on academic matters:

  • It is consulted on issues relating to various aspects of teaching and study, specifically on programs and teaching time, pedagogical practices, assessment, certification of studies and links between teaching and research.
  • It delivers an opinion on ENSTA's academic regulations, which are implemented upon approval by the Board of Directors.
  • It is consulted on appointing permanent and non-permanent teaching faculty.
  • It offers an opinion on any matter submitted by the institution's Director General.
  • It meets at least twice a year when convened by its President. It also meets when convened by its President if at least half of its members so request.

Research Board

The Research Board plays an advisory role in ENSTA's governance relating to research matters:

  • It is consulted on the general direction of research. This includes resource allocation, creating or closing laboratories, developing relations with national, foreign, or international scientific circles, teaching, and applications for accreditation to award national postgraduate degrees.
  • It reviews the annual report on ENSTA's laboratories research activities and their concrete actions to spread scientific culture.
  • It offers an opinion on any question submitted by the Director General.
  • It meets at least twice a year when convened by its President. It also meets when convened by its President if so requested by at least half of its members.

Orientation and Review Board

The Orientation Board is an advisory body established by the Board of Directors. Its mission involves making recommendations on ENSTA's areas of development, in particular on the evolution of its academic programs to adapt to demands in future graduate recruitment.

Its President and members are appointed by the Board of Directors on the recommendation of ENSTA's Director General.

The Orientation and Review Board meets at least twice a year, on the President's request.
