Gaspard, a top-level windsurfer and engineering student

Having always been passionate about sailing and the maritime world, Gaspard Carfantan has built his professional and personal life around this passion. At 23, he divides his time between competitive sailing and his engineering studies at ENSTA.

How do you manage your schedule to balance your engineering studies with elite-level sports?

My elite athlete status allows me, at ENSTA, to complete my degree in 5 years instead of 3 so that I can manage everything.

At the beginning of the year, I choose how to spread out my courses over two years and sign an agreement specifying the courses I’ll take. That works out to about three courses per Teaching Unit (UE) each year.

It’s demanding, but I was able to complete all my first-year Teaching Units. Next year, I’ll start my second year.

In practical terms, how does this work on a day-to-day basis?

I’m lucky to have my training center in Brest, a 20-minute bike ride from the Brest campus. That lets me attend classes in the morning and be out on the water in the afternoon. As for physical training, it’s pretty simple: I do it either in the evening or between classes at the gym on campus.

What takes up the most time is the on-water training. That’s at least four hours, including preparation, sailing, debriefing, and packing up. And let’s not forget that we’re at the mercy of the weather!

And when it comes to competitions, how do you manage your absences?

I organize my schedule around competitions and travel. Other students have been through this before me, so the teachers and administrative staff are used to it and are accommodating as long as I meet my commitments.

In a single season, I compete in the French Championship, several World Cups, and the World Championship, which is the season’s major event.

Thanks to this flexible schedule, I haven’t had to choose between my studies and sailing—that would have been really difficult for me.

Why did you choose to enroll at ENSTA?

Joining ENSTA is a great opportunity for me. It’s allowed me to be closer to the training center in Brest (which really makes my daily life easier) and also to attend an institution that’s well-known in the maritime field. Naval architecture has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid, and that’s the specialization I’ve chosen.

What are your goals from a sporting perspective?

My discipline is Olympic foil windsurfing. My dream is to compete in the Olympic Games one day—in 2028 or 2032. To do that, I need to work my way up the ranks at the national level.

I’ve been a junior world champion twice. Now I’m trying to make my mark among the seniors. I’m currently ranked 6th nationally, so I still have a few spots to climb, but competing in the Olympics is a dream I hold dear, and I’m lucky to have my whole family supporting me in this endeavor!
