Research at ENSTA

ENSTA ParisTech has five laboratories which conduct applied research in close collaboration with industry, as well as fundamental research in certain instances. The wide variety of topics covered reflects the broad array of specialities proposed in education. Indeed, the research staff is deeply involved in education, and the laboratories are the physical aspect of 'education and research departments' (UER - Unités d'enseignement et de recherche). Strong and often institutional ties with other French research institutions (CNRS, INRIA, Ecole Polytechnique, etc.), and with foreign partners, enable ENSTA ParisTech's research staff to operate in the framework of larger units having a strong international status.

The departments' research topics

The Chemistry and Processes Unit (UCP) is split into two main topics. The process engineering team enjoys an excellent reputation in the field of complex fluid thermodynamics, for which the main areas of application are the oil and agro industries, process security, resolving environmental problems and energy savings. The organic chemistry team has acquired an excellent reputation in heterocyclic chemistry and is currently developing skills in the field of organometallic chemistry.

The Electronics-IT Unit (UEI) carries out applied research into algorithms-architecture combinations for ultra-portable opto-electronic systems, joint software-hardware design for information processing architectures and multi-sensor antennas, signal propagation and processing for high-speed mobile radiocommunications.

Applied Mathematics Unit (UMA) develops skills in the following fields: modelling and simulation of propagation phenomena, systems optimisation and control, cryptography and coding, numerical simulation.

The Mechanics Unit (UME) works in particular on acoustics, on fluid-structure interactions, on non-linear vibrations, automotive mechanics, shape memory materials, oceanography and geophysical fluids.

Applied Optics Unit (UOA) is one of the world leaders in the field of ultra-short and ultra-intense pulsed lasers and their applications. It is heavily involved in European contracts. Major developments are underway involving new projects (ultra-high intensity, sources for cancer radiotherapy using protons, and extreme ultraviolet lithography).
